Are Smaller Memory Care Homes Better for Dementia?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but environment matters more than most people expect. Smaller memory care homes reduce noise, simplify routines, and create familiarity — all critical for dementia. Have you been to a large facility and seen a dozen seniors in recliners in front of a TV blasting at full volume? They are all asleep. Why? They are trying to shut the noise out. When you can no longer understand and follow a TV storyline, it is just a loud noise to your brain. I see this scene all too often, and it deeply concerns me — people simply park in front of the noise.

Or consider 24 people in a craft room with only one person actually doing the craft, while the rest sit there not participating, yet the facility checks off that they all participated. That is another concern of mine. A small home can cater to individuals: play balloon toss with a few, go for walks with those who are ambulatory, bake cookies with those who used to be homemakers, and so on. We are not just checking boxes. Come see the difference.

Across Fairfield County, more families are exploring this model as an alternative to traditional facilities. Just Like Home, LLC is a huge advocate for small homes across the state. We are the only two at present. Come see the difference for your loved one.
